  • Sprains, strains, and muscle or ligament tears
  • Injuries to tendons, nerves, or vessels
  • Numbness or weakness in the hand or arm (including carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Arthritis
  • Contractures
  • Swelling or inflammation

Nationally recognized program
The Hand and Microsurgery Service is a component of UW Medical Center's Bone and Joint Surgery Center, which is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top orthopaedic program in the western half of the United States.

Hand SurgeryOur physicians, with support from research programs, lead the way in innovative care for hand and other upper extremity problems. We are actively developing new, more effective methods of evaluating and treating our patients.

Dr. Doug Hanel and Dr. Tomas Trumble ranked as a "Top Doctor" in the category of "Pediatric Hand Surgery" and "Hand Surgery" (News source: Seattle Magazine, September 2007 & 2008).

Our approach
Our goal is for the patient to be able to return to full function and activities. Our multidisciplinary approach allows us to provide the most appropriate care for the patient's problem, with assistance from colleagues in rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, neurology, and many other fields. In addition, other world-class experts at UWMC can assist with diagnosis and treatment plans.

Management options can range from simple exercises to major reconstructive surgery performed at UW Medical Center. Two of our special interests lie in using microsurgical techniques to reconstruct arms with damaged nerves and tendons and in using tissue transfers to replace lost form and function.

Facilities
The University of Washington offers three clinics that provide information and care for individuals with a wide range of hand and wrist problems.
